Guwahati, Sept 13: Gaurav Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, expressed his disapproval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent trip to Manipur, labeling it as 'two years too late' and suggesting that it focused more on appearances than on the actual issues facing the state.
According to Gogoi, the Prime Minister should have visited Manipur immediately following the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023, which resulted in over 260 fatalities and left many displaced.
Opposition parties have consistently criticized Modi for his delayed response, claiming he has overlooked the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
In a statement shared on a popular microblogging platform, Gogoi remarked, 'The initial step towards peace and recovery in Manipur should have been Prime Minister Modi's visit two years ago.' He further stated, 'Now that he has arrived two years late, his visit should focus on honoring the feelings of the Northeast. However, the optics appear disconnected from reality and seem more concerned with the Prime Minister's image.'
During his visit to Churachandpur, a Kuki-majority area, and Imphal, a stronghold of the Meitei community, Modi engaged with internally displaced individuals and held public meetings in both locations. He also announced development projects worth ₹8,500 crores for the state.
